More priority levels
Instead of just a star indicating priority and then filtering it into a list, set up more than one priority level. I need to have priority tasks but also need them sorted by high, medium, low, and none. not everything is the same priority. I find myself having to rearrange the tasks on the list all the time.
Astrid had an elegant two level system where you could hide anything you didn't want to see but could then open a second panel to get to the more "advanced" stuff. The beauty of it was that you could move items from one panel to the other (by default) so that those who wanted to see things like priorities could do so.
I also agree that a simple prioritization system does not add complexity to the task. If you want simple, you can see that any number of "!" or stars are just your priority. If it has no exclamations or stars it's not a priority. For those people having 3 stars is the same as having one.
Right now there is no way to sort by priority and that's a true shame. Wunderlist just doesn't work for many of us who have complex todo lists and need some true Next Action sorting.
I changed to wunderlist as my last task manager list has been sold off and I don't think the new system will work for me. I saw someone at one of my jobs using Wunderlist and thought it would be a good replacement and after a day I discovered there was no way to set a priority of high, medium, low, or none. I need that as some tasks don't have a set due date but I need to be able to see that certain tasks need to be done before others. If I can't set priorities I am going to have to keep looking for a better program to use.

I can definitely sympathize with the users who prefer the simplicity of Wunderlist's design and straightforward star/no-star system. However, the inability to prioritize my tasks really minimizes the utility of this app. Perhaps a good compromise would be to allow the user to drag and drop tasks up and down within the list. It's an easy, intuitive interface for prioritization that doesn't alter the aesthetics of the app at all.
In the absence of the above, just having starred items auto-sort to the top would be a big improvement.
for me, a must-have-feature!!! people who don't like it, don't have to use it!
Just dropped Astrid for Wunderlist. Unfortunately, I have to create separate groups (i.e. Work - High Priority, Work - Med Priority, Work - Low Priority) for manageability. I find this essential for organizing longer lists and this was one of the key reasons I chose Astrid originally (along with being able to filter based on priority). This feature receives 3 votes from me!

If this is implemented, please include the option to turn off priorities in the settings! I think they are needlessly complex and the starred option works perfectly for denoting important tasks :)

Over on the "Wunderlist to the Rescue: Farewell Astrid" blog post, I got the following response from someone at Wunderlist:
At the moment we don't have plans to build a multi-priority system, but we never say never and will keep it on our list."
I am puzzled by why they wouldn't want to have priorities when so many people are clamoring for it on uservoice (over 1,100 votes on this!).
It is such a simple, core component of task management and many people migrating from other platforms (such as Astrid) find it to be a non-starter.

OR have the star banner for urgent items, then three additional red banners with H, M and L instead of a star for High, Medium, Low.
Peter, you got me thinking. What about different size banners for priority levels? Large, medium, small. Same color. Keep it simple, but still able to see priorities easily.

I would like colors (red orange green) but Wunderlist is so clean, maybe a number would be better (1-2-3). I would not like the ability to add more stars. The star is perfect, priority feature should be different / additional (and totally hidden for people who don't use it).
The true appeal of a clean and simple approach is the ability to empower the end user to decide on maximum functionality within the look.
For those of us that need prioritization as a basic function, why not give us the option of adding some granularity to the current binary priority/no priority?
If you want to maintain the current look and feel, give us the ability to add more than one star, please. Personally I think a simple numerical value (e.g. 0-4 scale) is cleanest, but please no colors. Some people are color blind.
Setting the priorities will make the app not only more comfy but useful thing in business and life !!!
I'd also like to see Steven Covey's Priority Matrix added as an option for lists.

Or, rather than different colored stars, keep it one color, but make it 1, 2 or 3 star for priority ( * , ** , *** ). I think my brain would find it easier to see at a glance what the priority levels of my tasks are.
I really like the 'on hold' idea Simon Lucas has, too.

Need to be able to capture tasks that are "on hold"
The Low priority could be "hold".
A "held" task should be in grey rather than black type so they are easy to ignore when scanning list.
Thus priorities 1, 2, 3 with different colour stars and "on hold" in grey.
Would be realy helpfull! Imagine a day with real tasks. There are always more than 1 priority. At least 3 priority would be fine! Red star, blue star, yellow star :)
